No Need to Rev the Engine Before Turning Off the Car!
There is a classic habit that is still often practiced by some car drivers, namely revving the engine before turning off the car. They say it keeps the battery strong and makes it easier to start the engine again later. But is that really true?
It turns out that this method is outdated and no longer necessary, especially if your car has a modern system.
Back in the day, when cars didn’t have computerized systems, revving the engine before turning off the car was believed to help charge the battery through the alternator. Additionally, the high engine RPM was thought to help distribute the last bit of oil before the engine completely stopped.
However, modern cars now use an ECU (Engine Control Unit) that automatically regulates oil flow and electrical systems. Therefore, there is no longer a logical reason to rev the engine before turning off the car.
It Can Actually Damage the Engine
Instead of keeping the engine healthy, the habit of revving the engine before turning off the car can actually cause damage. When the engine is turned off while still at high RPM, the oil level drops suddenly and drastically, causing engine components to rub against each other without sufficient protection. The result? Components wear out quickly, and engine performance may decline.
Avoid This If Your Car Has a Turbocharger
Especially for owners of turbocharged cars, be careful! The turbocharger needs time to cool down before the engine is turned off. If you rev the engine just before turning it off, the turbocharger can overheat and wear out faster.
So, the more advanced the car, the more you should abandon outdated methods that no longer align with modern engine systems.
Wastes Fuel and Increases Pollution
Besides making the engine more prone to damage, revving the engine before turning it off also wastes fuel and increases air pollution. The effect of adding electrical current to the battery is minimal, especially if the gas pedal is only pressed briefly.
It’s better to turn off the car normally, without revving the engine.

Tak Perlu Geber Gas Sebelum Matikan Mesin Mobil
Ada kebiasaan klasik yang masih sering dilakukan sebagian pengemudi mobil, yakni memainkan pedal gas (geber) sebelum mematikan mobil. Katanya sih biar aki tetap kuat dan mesin gampang nyala lagi nanti. Tapi, apa benar begitu?
Malah Bisa Bikin Mesin Rusak
Wajib Dihindari Kalau Mobil Kamu Punya Turbo
Khusus buat pemilik mobil bermesin turbocharger, hati-hati!
